Clean Up Stashes Every Few Days: Hamster's are notorious for stashing away food. If you can find a stash, remove it after 5 to 6 days. This will avoid mold and rot, while also letting your hamster keep it's stash for a little while. Do not remove the stash every day, as this can frustrate them and cause them to feel the need to build the stash again and again.

Wipe Down Food and Water Dishes: When you change your hamster's food and water each day, simply wipe down the food and water dishes with an old rag. It will help keep them from getting gross over time.

Clean Old Nests: If there is a nest in your hamster's habitat that they are no longer using, it typically means the nesting material has gotten old. The nest could be wet or dirty or contaminated with feces. So simply remove that nest to avoid it causing any strong odors.

Discard Old Tunnels: If some of your hamster's tunnels get wet or overly chewed, it's time to remove them. Just throw away any old tunnels. Wet ones can cause mold and chewed ones no longer serve their purpose.

Remove Wet Bedding: Throw away any wet bedding as soon as you notice it. This will avoid the bedding from absorbing the water and ultimately causing an odor or beginning to rot.
